Capilano Suspension Bridge

The place

A 137-metre cedar-plank bridge sways 70 metres above the Capilano River, joined by the cliff-hugging Cliffwalk and the Treetops Adventure walkways strung between old-growth Douglas firs. The original West Coast thrill walk.

Set in a pocket of old-growth coastal rainforest just minutes from the city, Capilano packs a lot of West Coast wilderness into a single afternoon. The main event is the swaying suspension bridge, but the Cliffwalk — a series of narrow cantilevered walkways pinned to the granite face — and the Treetops Adventure, seven footbridges suspended between living Douglas firs, are every bit as memorable.

Go early or late in the day to beat the tour-bus crowds, and don't rush the ground-level trails: the rainforest boardwalk, the totem-pole collection and the Kia'palano cultural displays are included and easily missed. Rain is part of the experience here — bring a light jacket and the moss-green canyon looks its best under soft cloud.
