Gros Morne is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where geology is the main attraction. The Tablelands are a rare slice of the Earth's mantle pushed to the surface — a barren orange plateau unlike anywhere else in the country — while the boat trip up the landlocked Western Brook Pond glides beneath billion-year-old cliffs.
This is Newfoundland, so weather moves fast and distances are real; give yourself several days and a rental car. The reward is raw, uncrowded wilderness, from the strenuous Gros Morne Mountain summit to quiet coastal villages where the fishing heritage is still very much alive.
