The place
The most photographed lighthouse in Canada stands on wave-smoothed granite at the edge of the Atlantic. A small fishing village, big open sky, and a coastline that turns dramatic when the surf is up.
Peggy's Cove distils the Nova Scotia coast into one image: a classic red-and-white lighthouse standing on a shelf of wave-polished granite, backed by a tiny working fishing village. It's an easy, rewarding stop, best in the softer light of early morning or golden hour when the tour buses have moved on.
The granite is beautiful but treacherous — the darker rock near the waterline is wet and slippery, and rogue waves are a genuine danger, so keep well back from the surf. Round out the visit with a bowl of chowder in the village and the short drive along the Lighthouse Route.
